Zinnia x hybrida Profusion White

Gold Medal

In 1999, Zinnia Profusion Cherry was awarded the Fleuroselect Gold Medal, and described as a real bedding plant breakthrough. This praise is equally true of Zinnia Profusion White, which extends the breeding quality of this beautiful variety even further. Profusion White is suited to the changeable European climate, providing an abundance of single white flowers on regular, dwarf compact plants from May until well into the autumn. Extremely vigorous and highly disease resistant, Profusion White is ideally suited for professional bedding and pot plant cultivation.

Zinnia Profusion Cherry is also the recipient of the All-America Selections award for performance in North American trials.

in detail

Zinnia is a member of the Composite family and originates from central and South America. Current varieties have been created by cross breeding various Zinnia species. As a native American the Zinnia has never really travelled, because it prefers warm, dry conditions. This problem was tackled with the introduction of the 'Profusion' series in 1999. 'Profusion Cherry' led the way in adapting the Zinnia to less temperate climes, and like its sibling 'Profusion White' is perfectly suited to changeable European conditions. 'Profusion White' has elevated the status of the Zinnia to that of a true 'world plant'.
Zinnia 'Profusion White' produces attractive plants with an abundance of white flowers which require little attention and can cope well with sun and heat, but also with less clement conditions. Depending on the time of sowing, they perform well as summer flowering plants or as late summer/early autumn colour in the garden. In addition, their bright, lasting white colour makes them ideally suitable as indoor pot plants long after the garden season is over. They are not particularly thirsty, require little feed and no treatment at all for powdery mildew. The plants branch well and strongly and have an attractive, compact form. This combination of characteristics convinced the Fleuroselect judges that Zinnia 'Profusion White' is a worthy recipient of Gold. Zinnias are normally sold in flower, but 'Profusion White' should offer the keen hobby gardener no problems from seed. Sowing can start inside in February and March and outside from April. The seed germinates at 25°C after which warm and dry conditions are required for growing on. The plant flowers after approximately 8 to 9 weeks and can be planted outside from the middle of May. In the garden 'Profusion White' forms a perfect colourful border in combination with other Zinnias, while the addition of colourful 'ground cover' varieties can create interesting combinations. Alternatively, combinations with tall plants such as Delphiniums or Chrysanthemum frutescens (Marguerite) can create a stunning effect. And don't forget - a 'Profusion' in a pot is also a feast for the eye on the balcony of patio.
