Zinnia x hybrida Profusion Cherry

Gold Medal

Zinnia Profusion Cherry is a real bedding plant breakthrough flowering in Europe and other temperate climates from May to October. Zinnia is already very popular in warmer areas, be it with a certain susceptibility to powdery mildew. Profusion Cherry has settled this problem for good and is therefore the ideal Zinnia. It displays an abundance of stunning, cherry coloured flowers on attractive, perfectly regular plants. This profusion of cherry is in short a treat for the gardener. While currently only available in warm, (definitely modern,) deep cherry-red, additions through the colour range for this true Fleuroselect Gold Medal winner are expected. Oh yes, its short cultivation period and early flowering also make Zinnia Profusion Cherry ideally suitable for professional bedding and pot plant cultivation.

Profusion Cherry is also the recipient of the All-America Selections award for performance in North American trials.

In detail

Zinnia is a member of the Composite family and originates from Central and South America. Current varieties have been created by cross breeding various Zinnia species. As a native American the Zinnia has never really travelled, also because it prefers warm, dry conditions. The new 'Profusion Cherry' is a real breakthrough in both breeding and use. At last we can enjoy this beautiful, easy to care for plant in more moderate climates and the possibilities for the Zinnia have taken off. The attractive plants with stunning cherry-red flowers require little attention and can cope with sun and heat. Their water requirements are low, they require relatively little feed and no treatment for powdery mildew. In addition, the plants branch well and have an attractive compact form. For all these characteristics Zinnia 'Profusion Cherry' has rightly been awarded the prestigious Fleuroselect Gold Medal. Zinnias are normally sold in flower, but 'Profusion Cherry' should also offer the keen hobby gardener no problems from seed. Sowing can start inside in February and March and outside from April. The seed germinates at 25°C after which warm and dry conditions are required for growing on. The plant flowers after approximately 8 to 9 weeks and can be planted outside from the middle of May. In the garden Profusion Cherry forms a perfect colourful border in combination with other Zinnias while the addition of white Alyssum also offers interesting possibilities. Combinations can also be made with tall, pale plants such as the Delphinium or the Chrysanthemum frutescens (Marguerite). Finally, on the patio or balcony a pot profusing with cherry is a feast for the eye.
